PSA & Call To Action: Campaign against domestic violence has a weird (sad, wrong) way of showing it.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan 's post here, I have learned about something that I want to encourage everyone to take action on.

The following is a repost of lavvyan's words, as well as additional comments of mine.

lavvyan's post:

Sadly, I don't speak Danish. Or maybe luckily, as this online game is just about the sickest thing I've seen in quite a while. WARNING: link and further text might be triggering for domestic abuse.

The game is called "Hit the Bitch", which more or less tells you all you need to know. It's very easily played, too: the entire point is to hit the woman talking at you (I'm going to assume she's taunting, see above re: no speak Danish) until she goes down. You do that using the mouse. Depending on you good you are at slapping her in the face, the game decrees you either a Pussy or a Gangsta.

Both actress and make-up are pretty convincing: she gets progressively more bruised and quiet until blood is running from her nose, and when you make it through the game the credits show her crying on the floor.

Disgusted yet? It gets better: if you do succeed in knocking her down (easy enough, just you keep hitting), the game informs you that being "100% Gangsta" is also being "100% Idiot". From what little I understand of them, the credits urge you to seek help or at least join a support group.

That's right. Spending five minutes doing your best to get a young woman to cry by beating her up is really a campaign against domestic abuse.

To cite the website the credits link to:
"The NGO for Children exposed to Violence at Home [...] was formed in order to help children living in families exposed to domestic violence. Through information campaigns the organisation aims to support children who are exposed to violence within the four walls of their home.

[...]

"The latest campaigns are aimed at teenagers. The ‘Break the Chain’ campaign intends to get this age group to realise that they can do something towards ending violence in the family. “Break up before you Break Down” is a campaign aimed at violence in teenage relationships. These information campaigns consist of a video programme and a CD, where children living in families exposed to violence and young couples tell their stories."

Obviously, the latest campaigns also include an online game that is supposed to make you realise that beating someone is bad by, you know, making you beat someone. Repeatedly. Until she bleeds. This accompanied by the gentle and understanding title, I'm sure "Hit the Bitch" is a great tool in raising public awareness.

You can find the contact info to tell the NGO what you think of their awesome campaign over here.

Yeah, I can see teenaged boys and young men playing this for hours, egging each other on and seeing who can Hit the Bitch hardest. Who cares if there's a message at the end; just reload the page and start over.

This really is disgusting.

my words again:

Anyone reading, I encourage you to email them about this - even something short and quick could help make a difference.

Here's the email that I wrote them. I'm posting it to give people an idea, if they're stuck on what to say. I encourage you to *not* just copy and paste, because I don't want it to sound like a random petition thing, you know? Putting in your own words is great. But if it's a choice between copy-paste and nothing, I'll take the copy-paste, as long as you truly agree with the words.

Also, although I'm not an expert on this type of feedback to groups by any means, I would think that including your full name might help. Also, if anyone's in the position to actually call them (number here), that would probably be *fantastic*.

Your online game

To Whom It May Concern:

While I applaud your campaign aimed at supporting children of domestic abuse, I believe that the game "Hit the Bitch" should not be a part of it.

In today's society, fast-paced media and short attention spans in regards to entertainment are unfortunately all too popular. This, combined with the sad fact that many people do like games that specifically focus on violence, makes your game a less than effective tool for teaching against domestic violence. Many people may play the game with the purpose of getting a high score and simply ignore the ending message.

To better illustrate the concept of "Gangsta (being violent) = Idiot" in game format, I would recommend a multiple choice quiz, giving different scenarios and asking the user to choose what they would do. A score could be given at the end as to how "Gansta" or "Idiot" the user is. The reading of the questions and picking answers would encourage thinking, and this must be preferable to allowing the user to participate in what is a violent act.

Thank you,
