Thoughts on SGU 01x03, Air Part 3

That was interesting. Good interesting.

Well, there were a couple things that made me go "...hm." Specifically the music at the end. It was different enough without overlapping the dialogue, and when it started doing that it was just weird.

Overall I found it a very satisfying conclusion to these first episodes. It made me hopeful for the crew's survival but also reminded me how desperate their situation is.

I love what they did with Rush assuming (hoping) there would be a safety protocol to keep the ship from jumping. For some reason that just hit me.

Reminds me of Lost, with characters in the present and then going back to their lives before (e.g. Scott and the priest in the chapel).

I loved loved loved the way that the different characters all brought different things to what was going on. Felt more "real" than a lot of shows I've seen - i think that's a good way to put it, at least.

Also, Greer. Go Greer! I love it when TV programs aren't afraid to show us characters yelling and showing anger or passion.

Robert Carlyle is a cutie.

Rush/Eli OTP. I'm so feeling it! Hehehehee. Also Scott/Young (or Scott/Greer?? the pouring water into Scott's mouth was sweet but I realize it didn't mean anything) might be interesting. (And, five billion points to whoever writes a Scott/sandstorm fic.)

Chloe and Scott holding hands: I really did like what they did there, the friendship and the bonding over lost parents, and Scott trying to comfort her. The holding hands was sweet and I loved how you could see his hand was sunburned, and it was sweet and nice and, distracting music notwithstanding, a good scene. However, I would love to see them build up friendship for a while first - and I can just see them going straight into the romance.

Okay, and as much as I am talking about the music at the end... I think it really was okay. I remember there only being one episode of SG-1 (and there are a few I haven't seen, but I'm thinking they're like the others) that had music with lyrics, and that was Unending, the series finale. I remember it being so emotional - it made me cry. The music just really added to that emotion, and I felt that here too. The "breathe" thing I thought was nice because having the life support fixed (for now) and having better breathable air, and how we saw the characters just appreciating the air... it was emotional, and I liked that. I just wasn't prepared for the emotion to come so early in the show, I guess - but that is not a bad thing, just something I will have to get used to.

So far, SGU makes me happy!

comments

I really want to know what Greer did to be in detention.

Anyone wearing a suit in any Stargate show is either in trouble, or trouble.

Chloe in the previews I saw... I was worried about her because she seemed kind of like an airhead. Not exactly, but more so than other characters. But in the show she wasn't at all - I liked the emotions she showed and she seemed strong and vulnerable at the same time.

PREDICTION RUSH/ELI OTP LOLZ

Eli's getting beamed to a ship, and "can I get some pants" - he's Stargate's Arthur Dent.

comments

Stargate Universe!

The initial gateroom scene, when they were coming onto Destiny for the first time, was such a beautifully done scene, I thought. I really wanted to yell at everyone to just get the heck out of the way once they were there, though. That was a little scary, people and cases almost piling on top of each other. And of course the last part of that, with Col. Young... ouch!

Characters...
I like Eli. Eli is like... a younger, less stressed version of McKay. His voice sounds like Hewlett's when it gets higher, and he's got a similar feel in the delivery of some of the lines. When Eli was asking if they were going to beam him up and erase his memories, I was like "stop making jokes - they'll all turn out to be real!" And then they beamed him up and that was such an awesome part, just hearing the beaming sound and knowing he's going to be on a ship in half a second.

Dr. Rush is my favorite character so far - I think there's so much there within his personality to explore. I'm really looking forward to learning more about his character. He reminds me of a less frazzled version of Zelenka, with the long hair, but someone with a lot more personal demons.

Nice to see Dr. Lee, and I think I saw Walter for a split second. Tapping and Anderson appearances, of course, not much to really mention (except does anybody actually believe that O'Neill would put Rush in charge? That's not exactly the most plausible thing ever, hah). Also, I would like to order DVD copies of any and all Daniel Jackson Stargate primers, kthx.

The other characters on the ship, I also don't have a lot to say about them at the moment. But I definitely am looking forward to seeing more of them as well - it seems like the writers put together a lot of neat personalities. (Oh, except I do have one thing - is it a required for membership in the IOA that you have to be a jerk? Maybe she'll be better when there's less immediate pressure stuff going on.)

Tech...
I hadn't read a lot about the show prior to watching it, but I had heard that communication with Earth would be possible. I sort of had the idea that they would be making up some weird tech for it, just as some way of explaining why the communication would happen. But the fact that it's the Ancient communication stones, something we've seen before, makes a lot of sense.

As far as tech inherent to the ship, I would have liked to see more. I mean, I'm sure that they will be showing us lots more in future episodes. But it just seemed a tiny bit (not too much, but just a little) convenient that they needed MALPs and they got those floating cameras. I mean, aside from that, all we saw was the consoles and the graphical display, and those are sort of a given. Not too big of a deal for me though.

I really enjoyed the first two hours of this show... I can see a few different directions they might take it that I wouldn't be too happy about (e.g. tons of angst, lots of random romance) but I think that I will be enjoying it. Definitely looking forward to seeing more!

comments

Cam thought / Rodney thought / fic thought

Today I watched "Uninvited". I'm watching these eps the first time (re-runs on a cable channel). This was the first time I got to see Cam in civvies. I do believe he looks much better out of uniform. Apparently, looking at the episode list, I get to watch "200" tomorrow. This should be fun! I am looking forward to seeing these eps in this season for the first time.

I also saw Quentin Tarantino on Craig Ferguson just now. I am convinced that Rodney McKay has a crush on him. He talks quickly and with his hands, you get the sense that his brain just is always on the go, and he kinda looks like Hewlett. I think, although Rodney has his self-confidence issues, he also is narcissistic enough to like those characteristics, and I think he'd totally go for them in someone else.

Alternatively, I could be crazy.

My last post talked about how I wanted to write John/Atlantis or Chair!Fic (yeah, in my mind, Chair!Fic and John/Atlantis aren't necessarily the same.. I also make distinctions between AU and AR, but anyway...) and last night I DID! I will post it as soon as I can. It was so much easier to write than my WIP, which makes me think that I need really good prompts, and/or need to write more characterization and less action. I'm thinking the latter had a lot to do with the difference in these two. Makes me think about scrapping what I've got on my WIP (which isn't a lot compared to how much it probably will be when done) and re-writing it in a very different style. I think I may have a lot more fun that way.

comments

I'm working on a work in progress, and aside from that I've only written a five-things entry and the start of a fic tree.

The work in progress has taken a while and I am nowhere near close to finishing. It's just going rather slowly (it's not humongous or anything - but I guess it's not really short either, and I do keep having a ton of new ideas about it. I probably will want to break it up into separate stories in a series. Anyway.)

So when I think about writing fic, I basically think about my WIP... except every once in a while, I really really feel like I wanna do John/Atlantis or a Chair!Fic.

Hmmmmmmm.

comments

I've been watching reruns of season 9 of SG1. I haven't watched the series from the beginning but I did get to watch plenty of "classic" SG1, with Jack. And I really loved that, and miss that. So This season's been a bit of a change, of course, but I think I am really loving the dynamic with Cam. And for some reason, whether it is some difference in writing and/or acting, or if I am just noticing it more... wow, Teal'c is AWESOME.

I just.... Yesterday I watched the ep "Off the Grid" and.. can it get any better than this?

Oh wait! YES IT CAN.

There is something about that pose that I have always loved, and Teal'c pulls it off SO well, with the muscles and everything. Seriously, where was his second gun this whole time?

I've always found Teal'c to be amusing (I love dry humor) but I laughed SO hard today at a line from "The Scourge". Cam and Teal'c are talking about Teal'c's living situation, with Teal'c still being on base.

Cam: When we get back, I'll help you find a place.
Teal'c: That will not be necessary.
Cam: What are friends for?
Teal'c: For listening when they are told "That will not be necessary".

comments
