LJ problems. Again. And this one's a huge problem.
Okay. Wow.
I've tried to be super-patient with all the problems but this one is absolutely unforgiveable from any company providing a service:
People were/are able to access the logged-in-only information of other users.
See threads here, here, and, frighteningly, here. (All links prior to the "resources" section are comments on the latest release post.)
(A user says this has been fixed although LJ has not said anything about the issue as of now. And regardless of how short the time period of this problem may be, it's still kind of horrible.)
I can deal with DDoS attacks that aren't being caused by LJ in the first place. I can deal with LJ fixing things that aren't broken and having to go back and refix stuff that their fixes broke, and their track record with communicating with users, because I like it here. But this is not okay.
I am going to be backing up my journal and I am no longer going to delay getting my fic/graphics/etc organized and hosted on another site. (Well, I will delay a bit, as I'm still (2+months now) sick and my energy is currently being focused on deadlines at the end of this month and after that I've got a lot of catch-up to do. But I had the organization as my New Year's resolution at the 2011 new year and I'm not going to be putting it off like that anymore.) I doubt I'll be leaving LJ but I am certainly going to change my attitude about it. I will no longer assume that any of my content is safe; even if this issue has been completely fixed (but as I mentioned, LJ hasn't said anything about it so who knows), what other issues may come up in the future?
But anyway, I really just want you all to be aware of this, and may I suggest you also consider backing up content if you haven't and/or taking a look at what types of private content you keep here.
Resources:
LJ Archive at Sourceforge - back up your journal
ljarchive
Dreamwidth
Import LJ content to Dreamwidth - Note: during LJ problems there's usually a lot of interest in this, with a corresponding slowness/difficulty
Additional DW import FAQ links
dw_codesharing - Get DW invite codes
dreamwidth - comm for DW on LJ which can have posts with invite codes
Or PM me for a code
ETA: I was told that DW's importing function has been affected by LJ's new code so you may want to check out this post from DW.
ljbackup - another archiving tool?
