Tony was reviewing cold cases, searching a series of porn videos and gifs taken off a perp's laptop for anybody with a connection to a handfull of unsolved crimes.

The collection was varied, and some of the items would have struck his interest if he'd been watching at home; as it was, he reviewed them with the detachment of someone who had investigated his share of sex-related crimes.

Except at one point, when Tony clicked to the next item and - oh wow. Want flared inside him, sexual desire and... emotional longing as well.

Tony had no time to think before Gibbs appeared over his shoulder. Tony knew he'd been looking a bit dumbstruck and of course, Gibbs questioned him with a glance.

"I think I had an epiphany, boss," Tony blurted.

"Oh?"

"Um," replied Tony, realizing he shouldn't have spoken without thinking. "It's nothing," he continued, hoping Gibbs would cooperate with his attempt to shrug off the whole thing.

Gibbs pointed to the screen. "You got a problem with gays?"

And wasn't that the wrong idea. At least Gibbs looked doubtful when he suggested it; Tony wouldn't have liked to be thought of as a bigoted person.

"No problem boss." Tony smiled up at Gibbs and knew that he was deluding himself that this might be the end of it. Gibbs definitely wouldn't let go now, now that he could see there was something deeper going on in Tony's mind.

"What," Gibbs demanded.

"It's just. I think I want to be him." The bullpen was practically empty so there was nobody else to hear; Tony just had to worry about Gibbs, who looked at the computer screen again and then back at Tony.

"Never took you for the type to hurt somebody, DiNozzo." He shrugged a little and continued, "plenty of people who'll let you try it out with 'em if you want though."

The shrug didn't look quite casual to Tony, and he was somewhat intrigued now as well. So he tried to explain even though it felt like a bad idea. "I meant..." Tony swallowed, and practically whispered, "not that guy."

It wasn't often Tony surprised Gibbs but his eyes definitely said he was shocked. That quickly morphed, though, into something else. Tony didn't have time to interpret it before Gibbs was all but pulling him into the elevator with a terse "office, now."

Once there, Gibbs flicked the switch, then turned towards Tony and just. Stared. Tony almost wanted to take a step backwards but he was already against the wall. He wouldn't have anyway, because he hadn't gotten to where he was by backing down from Gibbs... but oh, did he ever want to. He'd never been stared at this intently for this long, not by Gibbs or his father or teachers or anybody.

When Gibbs finally spoke, it was soft but no less intense.

"Also lots of people who would wanna hurt you, Tony." He took a step forward. "Only one I wouldn't wanna hurt for doing it."

Tony found his voice again with something that he didn't make into a question, because he knew. "You, boss."

"Damn straight."

As Tony felt Gibbs's hand on his cheek - in a perfect echo of the moment he knew who he wanted to work for and with for the rest of his life - he wondered what would happen next.

"Okay," he said, and Gibbs smiled.
