Stargateland - post-phase-8 brainstorm post

Please read this first:
http://stargateland.livejournal.com/164842.html?thread=10266090#t10266090

I would definitely like to see something new start up. Thought we might want to brainstorm about how things might work, if other people are interested too.

Some of my thoughts -

Based on this:
http://clubstargate.livejournal.com/247631.html
The club activities I think will keep taking place. And that me to thinking about having something new be somewhat trimmed down, both for ease of running and because we could have people take part in clubstargate stuff as well.

I was thinking about something without teams. It would be a bit different but I think it might work. There would be less people needed for running things, I think. Group challenges could be where you ask for partners/groups in whatever challenge thread. The way points might work? Let's say it's like a new Stargate series, where maybe we're in a completly different galaxy. Some people are scientists and some are military and some are aliens and some are multiple things. Doesn't matter, you can choose whatever you would want to be. I might be military and an alien, for example, so any points I get would go towards both. And each group would have a point total divided by the number of people in the group, so groups don't have to be even. (I think though it would have to be each person was in the same number of groups, whatever number that was.)

And basically it would just be like.. low pressure. No team would necessarily win, just would be a neat way of looking at the numbers or whatever, something to keep participants motivated. But nobody would have to do every challenge. And you're not letting down anybody if you don't do something, because there aren't winners really. So it's mostly you just looking at your own particpation and having that be your motivation. Might not be explaining this well because I'm sleepy but did just want to get all of this out there asap so people can start thinking. Obviously there are a lot of different ways to do it, but I think this general type of way would help for not only decreasing the number of people needed to run different group comms or whatever (because the groups would just be names, not real teams) but also helping solve some of the team problems I think stargateland has run across in the past. (Problems like balance of teams, people feeling isolated from teammates who might not like Stargate in the same way, etc.)

It might seem like there's not as much potential for team unity or friendships and I do think that's true but I also think there are other things we could do to boost social interaction, and especially I think it would be so much better than having nothing available. Plus as mentioned above the activities of clubstargate it seems like will still be open, and we could have our own club comm as well, just possibly with less intensity of activities as maybe in the past, depending on people being available for running things.

If you're involved now in running something (even a team comm) and would like to keep being involved that is awesome, and if other people would be interested in being involved that's awesome too. Please say something here? Not any sort of commitment at all, just something where we can gague if having something in the future will be possible.

And it wouldn't have to be a big thing either, for you to help. For example having someone put in numbers on a spreadsheet on a weekly basis would be fantastic. Or anything, any talents you might have, even if you don't think they're relevant. 'Cause this is brainstorming, where we put ideas out there just to see where they go.

Any and all ideas you might have about a future comm, even if you can't be involved in running it - please share! I know we can make something work out and I'm really excited to see what form that might take. All ideas are welcome here so we can use them to build on and make something awesome from. :)

I'd love to be involved in anything new. I've enjoyed stargateland so much. I can't commit to anything mod related, I have too many study commitments for the next two years, but I'd definitely want to participate.

Yay! Glad to hear you'd want to participate (and yep, studies and things like that definitely come first!!)

I'm happy to share any organizational tools I've used (spreadsheets FTW!) and 'lessons learned' sort of thing. Also, if you do create something, I'm happy to advertise it extensively when we wrap up.

<3 Thanks so much - that really means a lot and I know I would benefit tons from it!!

I'll stick around for a while longer, just to see where it leads to... I can't commit in an organizing way because I really don't have the time. Honestly, if my days could last 36 hours instead of the 24 I have now, that would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome! And I totally understand! The last thing I want is people pushing themselves in ways that are bad for them, as it's all supposed to be happy and fun :) Thanks for commenting - I hope that it leads to something awesome! :D

It sounds interesting and I'd like to participate in some form of challenge comm. Not sure if I can help with anything on the modding side - I'd need to see what help you needed and how things are with me at the time. If you were running icontests as part of the comm, I could probably help with that. I ran a Stargate one until recently (had to close due to lack of participation - a familiar theme these days) and am still running one for The Sentinel.

Yay, thanks so much for the reply! Definitely we could see where things were at certain times for people. Like, we could set up something where we did an icontest as part of the challenges and you could pick (with probably a bit of lead time) when to run that challenge. I assume graphic size (icon or larger) wouldn't matter?

If the challenge is participation only, then I could run some of the graphics ones (probably one or two per phase, depending if we have phases and how long they are for). If there's voting involved, then it might be that I can only do once every few weeks - we'd have to see how things were at the time. I would suggest if there is voting that the graphics are kept similar (ie all icons, or all within a certain size limit) as it's hard to choose between an icon and a wallpaper - but I guess you already know that! :)

Coooooool. :D

I would absolutely love something like this!

Yay! I am really excited for this to work! :D

I'd be interested in getting involved post May or June... Food for thought, a lot of people are uncomfortable asking for teams and the like, so some sort of actual structure might make that easier on group challenges.

[identity profile] theeverdream.livejournal.com 2012-03-28 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's such a great point. With the thoughts above, maybe have people have two labels they have, an A and a B or something and then sometimes you could be grouped with one group, sometimes with another? Or something totally different that would work within whatever framework present.

I think also, instead of having a *ton* of group challenges, there are the things like the chatroom and clubstargate and such. I'm not quite sure how it would work best to balance them but I think, personally, I'd rather add extra stuff like that on once the people doing the comm got big enough in number to, since challenges and stuff would be needed to start. I mean, yeah the main thing for a lot of people is that friendship and such so why even have the challenges? But I think having a landcomm be the basis for the friendship stuff is good because it can help bring people together where they may, even with social comms, drift apart.

But I think it could be a very subjective thing, too. I would totally love to hear anything else anyone has along these lines... and thanks so much for bringing up the point you did!!

I would be interested in possibly doing something moddy and definitely playing. However, I am in the process of enlisting in the Air Force so I'm not necessarily going to be able to control when that happens or how much time I have extra once I get out of Basic and tech school.

[identity profile] theeverdream.livejournal.com 2012-03-28 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh aweome, yay Air Force and yay you! I'm sure that if we do get something up and running that there will be room for all sorts of partipation levels :)

I will definitely there for participation! Was just starting to get to a point in my life where I could help more/be involved so I would love to help out where needed!

[identity profile] theeverdream.livejournal.com 2012-03-28 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yay!! My main thing would be because of health issues not being able to commit to putting out challenges on time and enter results into a spreadsheet, so I would hope to have someone able to do that. Or of course if anyone wanted to run certain types of challenges altogether like graphics or games or fic. So those are more long-term commitments versus what I was describing in another comment. I would be able to write up challenges/rules, do a certain type of challenge, announce monthly results, stuff like that. And of course there's the more "fill-in" type things where you run a challenge once in a while or something - stuff like art, graphics, fic, puzzles. Not sure what would sound good to you so let me know your thoughts - obviously no commitment right now or anything!

I don't think many people noticed but in the last update LJ did, they made it so that you can set up challenges to go live at a certain time. We were messing with that this last week in [livejournal.com profile] clubstargate and it works really well! It sort of takes the pressure off for putting up challenges on time. I'd be more than happy to input data. I love that sort of stuff!

[identity profile] theeverdream.livejournal.com 2012-03-29 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow! Yay lj!

Also, yay you! When I think about going through posts and seeing who all participated in a challenge and putting that in a spreadsheet and making sure everything's correct my mind kinda goes all @_@ :D
