What the writers intended:

So let's do this scene with Steve's mom and Danny and Steve in the car, and Steve's on the phone so there's a bit of time for Doris and Danny to talk by themselves, and it'll be an interesting dynamic because even though she just got back she's very nosy and mom-ish about Steve's coworkers.


What the director intended:

Okay, Scott, you look at Alex a bit, 'cause you want to make sure he's still on the phone and not listening to the awkward and potentially embarrassing conversation you're having.


What actually happened:

Doris: So, Danny, relationship?
Danny: Relationship? *looks at Steve* I'm actually in a bit of a relationship (*looks at Steve*) with your son, a man in whose presence I cannot even think about the word "relationship" (*looks at Steve*) without looking at him, because I am in a relationship (*looks at Steve*) with Steve *looks at Steve*

Actually, I think it started when Doris suggested Danny should call her "Mom".

I got a lot of frustration from her in that moment instead of affection, but I realized they totally could have talked all about Danny on the plane trip back and if they had done that I know she would have asked Steve so many questions about everything :)
