Stargate SG-1 Fic: Destroyer (Daniel, PG)

Destroyer, PG

Daniel/Ba'al clone pre-slash / Daniel character study
A/N: Ignores Goa'uld genetic memory

The universe, he's learned, is often a funny place.

It's how they find a Ba'al clone in a hospital in Denver - a victim of a hit-and-run. He has brain damage; the doctors say that the complete lack of memory is almost certainly not an act.

They take him back to the mountain, place him in a - and he argued for a guarded suite instead of a cell, but no, this is Ba'al's clone we're talking about here. Of course.

And he's sent to interview him, as are others, but they find nothing.

They stop asking.

And so the clone is sent to Area 51.

But in his downtime he uses his security clearance to visit, to talk. About everything, it seems, except galactic domination.

Part of him sees a man who tortured his friend, who would take down and use up anyone who stood in his path. Yet each time he visits, more and more of him screams that genetics and life experiences are two very, very seperate things.

He wishes he could silence those thoughts and turn his back on a growing friendship for the sake of protecting his heart.

He's seen so much, become more jaded over the years, but he is still able to look past the surface far better than he can protect his heart.

*****

He is not usually given to self-pity, but this situation has made him introspective, until one night he cries a tear for his future self.

Once, he knows, was more than enough.

And another tear falls for the past.
