Stargate fic (Duplicity, Daniel/John, rated teen, 488 words) plus wallpaper

stargateland Two Roads challenge: Write a fic featuring two characters who never met/interacted in canon. Daniel and John did share a couple scenes in canon but I've always written Absolute Power!Daniel and doppelganger!John as their own characters. This story has all four.

The nightmares stopped, the crystal entity was safely back on its home planet... yet that version of Sheppard remained. Because it wasn't the crystal at all - just its reflection of the darkest side of John.
The Daniel in Shifu's dream was never real, and yet he too had permanence. Because Daniel knows the line between light and shadow is at times razor-thin - and he worries.
And those worries, those dark spots on the souls of two good men... they never really go away. And while Daniel and John keep each other company before and after being stars and stars apart...
... Somewhere... somewhere out there, another John and Daniel gaze into each other's eyes and think deep dark evil thoughts.

They live together, in Daniel's mansion. Moscow's bombed and his staff live lives of competence and fear. His friends are all dead or pretending they're not hiding from him, and Shifu's good to talk to for a little while but he's glad he has John.
Daniel and John circle each other like a bloodthirsty panther and - well Daniel's not sure what he is. Something beautiful, but not a cat because John's a cat, all sleek lines and sharp sharp teeth.
Daniel wakes up in a big bed all alone and eats breakfast with Shifu and day after day after day meets with his staff and attends to the plans that need to be made. He does what he has to do and normally that's enough. But sometimes, fun... fun comes in the form of stolen trips to the far walled-off section in the basement where he has a snarling, snapping, beautiful John chained to the wall, or locked in a cage, or shoved to his knees.

Daniel rules the world, but John? John rules Daniel. To everyone else Daniel is who they need him to be, but to John Daniel is a seething mass of failure and insecurity and almost-hopelessness.
But it's not entirely hopeless - never that. And because he knows he can change Daniel if he just works hard enough, that's what he does.
John pokes and prods at Daniel's mind and everything John says is taken as truth and wrapped up in Daniel's heart until it hurts John to look at him, because sometimes he doesn't think Daniel can even breathe for all that's going on inside.
So John's content to leave the spotlight to Daniel. Because he knows that whatever he whispers in the dead of night will come to pass.
He knows he holds the real power.

John and Daniel. Daniel and John. It's nowhere close to the epic romance neither of them would ever admit to dreaming of as children, but they both gave up on that long ago.
They're content with what they have. And if it's all too easy to avoid each other's gaze even as they're making love... well.
They just don't think about that too much.
