A/N: The title is from Catullus 101 (et multa per aequora vectus)

She wants coffee; all she wants is some coffee and maybe something to take the edge off her hunger. Something that'll keep okay in case she can't stomach it now.

It can be worse, in enclosed spaces, because while walking down the sidewalk is bad enough at least she doesn't have to interact with those people. To pretend she can't hear what they're thinking. That whenever her tenuous control on shutting out the multitude of voices fails, it leaves her shaken so terribly.

She wants coffee but she'll get a lot more - she knows she will - but, but....

She's spent too long running from her own head and has backed down from life too many times.

The door of the coffee shop is in her hand when someone walks behind her, full of venom and fury he thinks he's keeping from everyone and really, really shouldn't be sharing.

Well. Maybe tomorrow.

Five years later....

"You have a secret," she tells him.

He pulls out a charming smile - the type of charm that became second nature to him before he even grew up - as soon as he started to learn how to read people and show them what they wanted to see.

"Doesn't everybody?" He's smiling now, the smile with a bit of charm mixed with a bit of deflection with just a hint of mystery thrown in for good measure. His eyes twinkle as he lifts the oversized mug of coffee and takes a slow sip.

But she sees right through it faster than anybody he's ever met. Her voice hasn't changed from the calm, measured tones she's used from the beginning but he can see it in her eyes as she says: "not like yours."

And he gets goosebumps on his arms because he knows it's true, that being one of the very few aliens to ever walk around freely on Earth means that he's got one hell of a big secret, and he's never had anybody call him on it like this. She hasn't accused him of anything but from where he's sitting, looking at the certainty written all over her face, it feels just the same.

His smile this time is different, wary. "What's your secret," he asks, because he doesn't quite know what else to say.

"More like yours than most," she answers, and the goosebumps spread to his spine.

Five years later still....

Sometimes they will lie together and she will listen to him think about saving worlds. So many wonderful things he's seen, and he's better than the best book she's ever read. As he touches her face, her lips, her breasts, he thinks - not to her but deep inside him, where she knows it can't help but be real - that she's the most beautiful, most wonderful thing he's ever seen.

And he knows that with her, he doesn't ever need to hide. He doesn't mind keeping the secrets but having someone to share them with, someone to tell him that he did well, is a blessing.

They are at peace, being with each other... and that is so much more than either of them could ever have hoped for.

This was sweet. I can't say that it's a pairing I've ever considered before, but you made it work. :)

This isn't a pairing I've ever thought of before but now that you've written it, beautifully, I might add- I'm hungry to see more of it.

Think about this for a minute.

I just said that about a het pairing.
