I haven't slept so it's still Independence Day to me! Fic: SGA, Evan/John, teen, 286 words, angst
Normally when I ask for prompts I post the responses in comments but I wanted to share this as a separate entry both for its relevance to the holiday and because it has special meaning to me. Prompt was anything Lorne/Sheppard.
edit: Sept 2012 - Now with another story in the same verse.
Feb 2013 - A third story.
Independence Day, Evan/John
warnings/notes: This is angsty (permenant after-effects of off-screen imprisonment) and does not have a make-it-better ending. Non-religion-specific prayer, and a statement a of certain thing a character believes faith-wise.
rating: teen for the angst themes (no language/sexual themes).
words: 286
They don't go out much, but today is special. Like most members of the SGC they love their planet more than their country but that doesn't mean that he and John aren't two very patriotic Americans.
Evan reheats some of the mini burgers from the family gathering he managed to slip off to yesterday and, after those are eaten, feeds John a few spoonfuls of apple pie.
He gets John into the wheelchair, wiping a bit of cinnamon from the corner of John's lips before standing.
They got him back broken; the blood's long since cleaned and the bones set, but some wounds don't heal.
"Hey," Evan says, half his mind on the road ahead of him and half on John behind him in the van. "You looking forward to the fireworks? And the Academy Band, yeah?"
Evan keeps on rambling, eyes flicking up now and then to check John's expression in the rear-view mirror.
He came back silent too. Evan tears up every time he thinks on the fact that he can't remember what John's last words to him were.
*****
As Evan collapses exhausted into bed he says a thankful prayer for their day. John had watched the music and the fireworks with excitement in his eyes, and the relative smoothness of today's logistics makes him think that maybe John could be up for more frequent outings now even if he himself isn't.
The next part of the prayer is just a feeling, heartbreak offered up and silent plea made at the recognition and loss that were in John's eyes alongside the pleasure. Evan has never had the words to ask for the miracle out loud, but takes comfort knowing he is still heard.
Real life news article about the event they attended.
In case that gets taken down one day, here is a reference image for the article and the linked image.
