Thanks: Thanks goes to the takers of a poll about a story point. Also, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] somehowunbroken. While this story might have gotten finished without her help, the author would certainly have been infinitely more stressed (and a poorer story would probably have resulted). Check out her NCIS stories here and her Stargate stories here - it's well worth the trip.

A/N: This story takes place post-series (SGA). Atlantis has been back in Pegasus for a while, DADT has been repealed, and there has been a not-insignificant number of hives that have undergone the process that allows Wraith to exist on food that isn't people, although that battle is still ongoing.

Although the timelines may not match up, for DiNozzo it is set sometime after season 6.

I am, quite honestly, pretty sure this story had a mind of its own... I really don't have any other explanation for why (highlight for story spoiler) it's preslash instead of slash and contains a relatively large amount of Todd. It's also quite a bit more disjointed than my usual style, as I had a larger amount of material fleshed out in my mind that didn't get written down and what I did write down is more like excerpts from the bigger story. The bigger story involves Wraith pheromones, more of Lorne's musings on his own sexuality, an explanation of why Tony was the one to be sent to Atlantis, and more. Perhaps I will write it someday.

Administration was part of Evan Lorne's job. He even considered it part of his job to do the bits of administration (well, they weren't so much bits as they were rather large heaping mounds) that John was technically supposed to do but passed on instead. He didn't mind doing paperwork or inventory, or interviews with the IOA (well, he didn't mind the meetings on principle, but the IOA did, admittedly, bother him); he was good at it, and he liked working behind the scenes to help make things in general run smoothly or to help people specifically.

But sometimes, he'd just really rather be shooting a gun or flying a jumper - or facing an overdressed snake with a ribbon device and a really bad temper - than sitting behind his desk, and this week had been one of those times.

This time, he was responsible for the orientation of one Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, Atlantis' new agent for the marines on base.

And so far, it had been hell.

*****

Tony DiNozzo stepped out of the transporter and immediately knew he wasn't where he had intended to end up. (He was assuming, of course, that the hallway leading to the movie lounge wasn't mostly dark, slightly moldy smelling, and giving off really, really creepy vibes. He thought that was a pretty safe assumption.)

A voice came out of the darkness.

"You are... lost, I presume?"

There was something wrong about the voice, and just as Tony's brain started to match up what he was hearing and sensing with what he had read in the pre-departure briefs and had already been told about Atlantis, the speaker stepped into the dim light.

Shit, Tony thought. Fuck. Wow.

He'd been told about the Wraith, knew that the only way a Wraith would be free in Atlantis would be if it couldn't feed on humans, but still. He'd read that the Wraith were strong, knew that the creature advancing toward him could take him down without breaking a sweat.

But that wasn't different from facing down an armed felon when he didn't have a gun, and he'd done that enough to know the difference between a healthy fear that brings a shot of much-needed adrenaline so the brain could focus and a primal, hunted-animal terror.

"It is just that," the voice continued, "no one visits me willingly. I must confess to being rather... startled by your entrance."

Tony had been motionless and the Wraith stopped a couple feet in front of him. He started to notice details - the Wraith's jagged facial tattoo, the rough wet texture of the parts of the walls he could see, and... something else, dancing just at the edge of his awareness. It was like a smell he was trying to remember from a dream but couldn't quite, and he somehow found it calming.

The Wraith touched something on the wall and the lights brightened.

"I am called Todd. Do you have the time to join me for a drink?"

*****

The week was over and Evan had survived.

He figured it was due in equal parts to a) his vigorous denial that he was attracted to a man he wasn't absolutely sure was gay or bi, and b) the fact that he had jerked off at almost every available opportunity over the past several days (which did nothing to help Evan stop thinking of DiNozzo's contagious sense of humor but at least he wasn't thinking of his ass all the time, too).

From now on, at least, he'd only see Agent DiNozzo in passing.

*****

Evan appreciated Atlantis' upgraded entertainment opportunities. One of the best movie theaters Evan had ever been in, a much-expanded fitness center, garden areas and more had been set up during their time on Earth - at the behest of a certain General who was rumored to have said about the proposed amenities, "all work and no play makes Jack - and all of you too - really darn cranky."

Tonight was Chuck's first turn as DJ at their new club.. bar.. thing, and Evan thought his music selection was a bit lacking, although not terrible. Most people seemed to be enjoying themselves (although McKay, as always, was demonstrating that some people's cranky was more permanently affixed).

It was Evan's self-imposed duty to ensure that things were running smoothly, but he made sure to relax as well. So he was on the dance floor pressed up against other bodies and almost didn't see Todd come into the room - Todd who must have made a friend, because he never left his hallway and his nest of rooms, down and away from the center of the city.

(Almost never. There'd been a few times, before, but Evan doesn't think about them, doesn't think about the hard hard lesson he should have learned long ago, about the dangers of mixing alcohol with his own sexual experimentation. But Todd isn't the enemy, not anymore, even if he's not quite a friend, so Evan's happy that Todd is here.)

The group nearest the door reacted a bit, and Evan made his way to the side so he can see better, but mostly people around Todd ignored him after a glance or two - and most of the people in the room couldn't see him anyway. From this new angle Evan saw who Todd came in with. And if there was a bit - just a little bit - of a stir in his stomach at the sense memory caused by seeing Todd... well. Anthony DiNozzo in clubbing clothes turned the stir into a thrill, a jolt of electricity that moved liquid-hot up and down his spine.

*****

An hour later, and Evan had never pegged DiNozzo as the wallflower type - but there he was, still looking wistfully out at the dance floor while Todd bobbed his head to the music and made periodic comments in the agent's ear.

Evan smiled; seeing Todd so obviously enjoy himself was... odd and different, but very nice. DiNozzo was perking up when talking to Todd but in between seemed sort of sad.

And if there was anybody in this room Evan wanted to see smile....

*****

So Evan will talk to Tony - later. He'll feel like a failure, that he has to wait for Todd to leave so he doesn't have to make small talk with him when he approaches DiNozzo. But he'll himself he shouldn't: although he needs to make amends with Todd, tonight isn't about that.

Tonight is about... wanting Tony.

Tonight is about being somewhere so high up he can't see the ground - and stepping right up to the edge....

And with the blood rushing in his head and a grin on his face, finding out if he can fly.
