They'd been married for ten weeks when Valentine's Day came. He took her to a wonderful restaurant and gave her the beautiful necklace she'd been wanting, roses and all the chivalry she'd grown up dreaming of.
At home later, in the dark, she reached for him, wrapped her palm around him.
A moment passed, and another, quiet and unchanging, while she tried to make him feel good.
"Is it okay," he asked, closed-off and awkward, "if we don't tonight?"
There hadn't been much wine, he hadn't lately seemed too stressed....
"It's okay, John," Nancy lied. "Go to sleep."
